Psalm 122 speaks about Jerusalem as the City of God. The 'Testimony of Israel' (the law of Moses) resides there, within the walls of the city. The psalm was written after the building of Solomon's temple, but places it within the boundaries of the city (see for example, v.7 'within your walls'). 'Compact together' in verse 3 means 'all joined together' or, 'of a piece'. Temple and township were all part of one entity--God dwelling truly in the midst of His people. The temple was not remote from them, some 200 metres to the north!
