Ian is a Seminary-trained bible teacher, pastor and author with a Bachelor Degree in Biblical studies and has also been a businessman--and is a sailor! He is a member of the ACM Network (Associated Christian Ministries) acm.org.au/ in Australia and Sydney's Northern Beaches Christian Centre where he regularly ministers as well as in other churches. His hope is that this site will provide spiritual stimulus, encouragement and hope. Ian writes on Biblical subjects and comments from time to time on current and personal events in an attempt to contribute clarity and Biblical certainty. Until we see? DECEPTION AND DISCERNMENT…
A Challenge! (Referencing Isaiah 59:9-15)
Once-upon-a-time we imbibed opinions from a relatively small circle: family, peers, newspapers, books and maybe television news and commentary. Occasionally from cultures different to our own.
Today we have access, with terrifying immediacy, to every sane and insane idea on the planet!
Much is manipulated to appear and sound persuasive—shouted in the echo chambers of social media by self-promoting gurus, seers and ‘influencers’. Sensationalist, conspiratorial or inflammatory rat-baggery is peddled with flagrant abandon using bogus clips, apparent endorsements from the great and famous, and all sorts of other un-checked and unfiltered profligacy.
The coming tsunami of AI-generated ‘persuasion’ will take even greater advantage of the unwary or gullible.
Yikes!
In a much less inter-connected age Isaiah wrote, ‘righteousness stands at a distance; FOR truth has stumbled in the public square, and honesty cannot enter’ (v.14). Note the cause and effect relationship between truth and right order, or righteousness. Truth is always the plumbline against which relationships or society is measured.
And, Isaiah was addressing God’s own people—those called by His name!
Today too, truth has stumbled; and not only stumbled, but fallen; and not just fallen, but has been deliberately trampled beneath the boots of relativism and ignorance. (One is tempted to say, “and that’s just in the Church!”)
As in Isaiah’s day, true righteousness has been pushed into the distance, whilst an artifice has been substituted. Now, a man-made ‘righteousness’ is invoked: the ‘woke’, virtue-signalling, merit-seeking kind that is, in fact, an offence to the God of righteousness, and the righteousness of God! And—just as in that day, anyone daring to call out its falsehood ‘becomes prey’ to the savage guardians of the new virtue (v.15).
For everyone, and especially lovers and followers of Jesus this calls for discernment—and to be on guard. It calls too, for a bigger understanding of God’s whole counsel than a few ‘go-to’ verses used as some kind of triumphalist mantra peddled by a favourite TV preacher.
We are called not just to understand the meaning of Abraham, but also of Job; not just of Joshua or Daniel, but also of Sennacherib or Nebuchadnezzar; or of Cyrus or Esther in God’s sovereign workings.
If we are to withstand the tides of fakery, the winds of ‘doctrine’ and the waves of deceit and half-truths we will need to be adequately armed. Taking up the ‘sword of the Spirit’ means more than mantra-verses (as helpful as these can be).
The ‘sword of the Spirit’ is the entirety of what God has said (its entirety is RHEMA!) whether shouted loudly through a Joseph and his brothers, or quietly as the whispered voice heard by Elijah. Or the ‘softly flowing stream of Shiloah’ rejected by Judah in preference for the might and persuasion of Assyria! (Isaiah 8)
God has given them ALL for us and our admonition, “upon whom”, says Paul, “the end of ages has come”. He lets us know in 1 Corinthians 10 that ALL these were written down for our benefit. Known and understood, they provide the antidote to the stream of poison to which we are daily exposed.
There’s no excuse. God has provided. We must avail—in order to prevail.
