Ezekiel captured the vision of the glory of God departing the temple when Judah went into captivity. His description is telling. He saw the glory of God rise to depart and that departure was from ‘the MIDDLE of the city’ (see Ezekiel 11:23). Clearly the temple was located in the middle of the city, not on a hill to its north.
But wait...there’s more: Zechariah later described the return of God’s glory and wrote, ‘Thus says the Lord, “I will return to ZION, and dwell in the MIDDLE of Jerusalem...” Also in chapter 2, verse 10 the Lord talks about dwelling in the midst of His people. He always desires to be right in the midst of His people, just as the tent in the wilderness was the central feature of the camp.
