In John 11:48 we are told that after the raising of Lazarus the Council met and said, “What are we to do? For this man performs many signs. If we let him go on like this, everyone will believe in him, and the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation.”
Here, John uses the time-honored nick-name for the Temple, The Place. The Greek, shown below, reads literally like this ‘..and they will come the Romans and will take away (of us or ours) both the place and the nation.’
...καὶ ἐλεύσονται οἱ Ῥωμαῖοι καὶ ἀροῦσιν ἡμῶν καὶ τὸν τόπον καὶ τὸ ἔθνος.
It is clear that John means the Temple (as many translations say—even though the word Temple is not here!) and you’ll also note how closely identified in the Jewish heart, was the Temple (The Place) with their nationhood or identity.
