Jacob encountered (as the Hebrew says) THE PLACE (Ha Makom) and said “how awesome is THE PLACE; this is none other than the Bayth-El” which means the house of God (see Genesis 28:17 & 19).
Years later King David used Jacob’s very words--“this is the Bayth-El”--when he purchased from Ornan his threshing floor, which David called THE PLACE
(1 Chronicles 21:25; 'Ha Makom').
It was just near the Gihon Spring, at that time surrounded by a rectangular enclosure wall to secure its 'living water' for the people of Jebus--later to become The City of David (see the artist's impression below).
